「タイムレスメロディー」では、ビリヤード場でバイトし、音楽活動する河本(リトル・クリーチャーズの青柳拓次←最近、エビス<ザ・ホップ>のCMに出演している)とバンド仲間・チカコ(市川実日子)の微妙な関係?ピアノ調律師の田村と過去のない謎の男・篠田の関係を・・・。「青い車」では、幼少期のトラウマ、そしてサングラスで目の傷と心を閉ざすリチオ(ARATA)の真意、お互いどこか遠慮しがちな妹・このみ(宮崎あおい)と姉・アケミ(麻生久美子)の関係を・・・。「16[jyuroku]」では、東京へ向かう列車の中で、また東京のファミレスでサキ(東亜優)に気づかれない間に、そっと姿を消すヤマジ(柄本時生)の思いを・・・。決して言葉で多くは語られないものの、微妙な間や独特な空気感が、私たちにそれぞれの登場人物の心境や思いを深く考えさせる時間を与えます。この曖昧で、よく分からない関係や各々の思いが、実はとても人間らしいことのように思えてなりません。完璧な人間なんて、誰一人いるわけもなく、常に心の中では様々な思いが揺れ、正解や結論のないことも多々考えながら・・・、それでも、人間は日々暮らしています。割り切れないことも、理解できないことも含め、人間は生きているわけです。そんな日常の水面下で揺れ動く心の動きを、本当に上手に描くのが奥原監督です。作品を見ていて思うのは、一見主役だと思われていた台詞が実は、台詞のないシーンを際立たせるための脇役であったのかもしれない、と思えてならないこと。もの凄く退屈なことを言っているようですが、物事の本質を捉えるには、余計なことは全くいらないのでしょう。これこそがテレビと映画の違いであり、奥原作品の最大の魅力と言えます。
